Skanska was awarded this $50 million project after the previous contractor was unable to successfully complete the work. Under a construction management at-risk (CMAR) contract, Skanska provided preconstruction and construction phase services for the balance of the incomplete work in an existing 500,000-SF terminal at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). Certain documents for this project we considered sensitive security information (SSI) and were considered privileged and confidential. Strict adherences to the SSI document protection requirements were required.

This project was complex as work was performed in an occupied, very active international airline terminal around airside activities, including aircraft and ground support operations. Much of the work was located in federal inspection areas and other secure areas requiring badging and background checks of all employees entering those federally controlled areas. Furthermore, to minimize disruptions to airport operations, a portion of the work was accomplished in off-hours while the terminal was not occupied.

Working closely with Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) representatives, the architect and owner’s representative, Skanska provided cost estimating, scheduling, phasing and logistics planning, warehousing and inventorying of stored materials, document review and constructability reviews during the pre-construction phase of the project.

Construction phase services included renovations to the Federal Inspectional Service area for Customs and Border Protection’s document inspection and baggage claim hall; passenger boarding and arrival satellites 3, 4, 5 and 7; Level 3 gate holdroom ceiling; bathrooms on Levels 1 and 3; Level 3 passenger security checkpoint; first class airline club corridor and airline baggage services office shell space. Additional construction services included provisions for amenities and a complete punch list.
