Harlow Surgery Expansion, Bed Tower Addition and New Central Energy Plant

  • Harlow Building Surgery Expansion, Bed Tower Addition and New Central Utility Plant

Skanska provided preconstruction and construction management services for the three-phase Harlow Building surgery expansion and new bed tower project. Skanska utilized our in-house Building Information Modeling (BIM) expertise extensively throughout design and preconstruction to identify possible structural and systems clashes early in the process rather than in the field. Subcontractors were required to provide BIM drawings so a complete building overlay could be completed and reviewed for constructability issues prior to the start of construction for those trades.

Phase One: OR Expansion
This phase included additions and renovations to the OR, ambulatory surgery and post anesthetic care unit departments. Second floor additions of approximately 30,000-SF added four new operating rooms, and renovations of approximately 27,000-SF were completed in 10 existing operating rooms, two of which were remodeled to heart ORs.

Phase Two: Bed Tower
This 220,080-SF, five story addition added 108 new patient rooms. Phase two also encompassed 12,920-SF of major renovations to the existing patient rooms. Also included is a new hospital main entrance, first floor retail, support function space addition of approximately 30,000-SF, and rework of site drives and parking.

Phase Three: Backfill
This 40,000-SF renovation of the existing Harlow Tower included five OR renovations, mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades. Renovations also included a new men’s and women’s locker room, conference rooms, offices space and physician support space.
