We built the new state-of-the-art Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge and now provide it with a range of facilities management services.

Beautiful and efficient

We completed construction of the new hospital in 2019, and it was formally opened by the Queen later that year.

The new hospital was designed to combine a highly efficient clinical layout with a stunning external appearance. Set in beautifully landscaped grounds, it captures the essence of the original tuberculosis hospital that is today’s pioneering heart and lung treatment and transplant centre of excellence.

The 40,000sqm hospital has 310 beds, six operating theatres and six catheterisation labs.

Maintaining the facilities

We are providing facilities management services to the hospital until 2048.

These include looking after specialist medical equipment, maintaining the fabric of the building and statutory compliance tests. We also carry out a range of mechanical and electric engineering activities, together with asset management.

We run the facilities management helpdesk at the hospital.

Maximising energy efficiency

Building information modelling (BIM) technology was used to maximise energy efficiency and map all the building’s services. A clear plan of all the facilities ensures the hospital has long-term flexibility regarding the changing use of spaces. The technology was also used to engage clinicians during the construction process, bringing the building to life.
